API 1155

API Publication 1155, Evaluation Methodology for Software Based Leak Detection Systems, facilitates the comparison of leak detection software products with respect to a particular pipeline. Prior to API 1155’s development, pipeline companies generally paid a leak detection software vendor to perform an expensive leak study to determine if the vendor’s product was suitable for use on a given pipeline system. This expense often resulted in a commitment to the vendor performing a study because the large cost was generally incurred performing the study, and presumably, much of the work that went into the study could be applied to the implementation of the online system.

API 1155 provides a method of characterizing the pipeline, fluid properties, and operational behavior one time according to the conventions described in procedure. This allows a pipeline company to offer any number of vendors the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities, using exactly the same criteria as the basis for each vendor’s study. This reduces the overall cost of the study, although some vendor compensation is generally required, and it provides a method for the operating company to compare the relative merits of competing solution techniques with respect to the operating dynamics of their particular pipeline.

UTSI is well qualified to assist pipeline companies in the development of the required data sets to support API 1155 studies, and is available to assist in the collection and/or definition of this data. We can assist in the development of leak scenarios that would serve as a basis for evaluating leak detection system performance, develop bid specifications, and assist in the implementation of the project.

API Publication 1155 can be ordered directly from API by mail (Order Form available at http://www.api.org/cat/apiglobalorder.pdf). Ordering Information is provided in their online catalog (http://www.api.org/cat/catalg00.pdf) under Pipeline Transportation, then Publications.

API Publication 1155 can also be ordered online from http://www.global.ihs.com. Enter the document number API PUB 1155.
